DLN: You had to go back to school to upskill in data. Looking back, what support could a DLN or collective intelligence community have provided?
Dr. Kevin Mayo: The biggest gap in my formal education was applying data skills directly to healthcare and life sciences. We did real-world case studies, but mostly in industries like retail. What I needed was a community where I could learn with others in my field. AI is evolving so fast that it’s nearly impossible for one person to stay on top of everything. Having mentors who could say, “This is where you should focus. This can wait,” would have been incredibly valuable. Certification programs give you fundamentals, but true expertise comes from applying knowledge—and guidance from mentors would have made that transition much smoother.

DLN: Why is community so critical for leaders as AI continues to evolve?
Dr. Kevin Mayo: We’re in what some call a new industrial revolution. AI and machine learning aren’t just chatbots or generative AI—they’re much broader. But there’s a lot of misunderstanding around what they really are. That’s where community helps. Leaders need trusted networks to cut through the noise, share insights, and learn from each other’s experiments. Mentorship creates a feedback loop: if one direction doesn’t work, the community can quickly course-correct.
Accelerating Breakthroughs with Real-Time Data
DLN: If teams had direct access to experts and real-time data, how close could we be to breakthroughs—say, even curing cancer?
Dr. Kevin Mayo: Honestly? Everything could accelerate. AI adds efficiency but also enables discoveries in areas we couldn’t reach before. Without computational power, insights into complex biology or even quantum mechanics behind disease would remain out of reach. Now, we can imagine drug discovery pipelines shrinking from 10 years to just a few. The foundational AI models get us to the doorstep. What matters next is how teams deploy and apply them locally. That’s where mentorship and collaboration are essential.

Dr. Kevin Mayo: Absolutely. Collaboration fosters creative thinking that one person working alone might miss. Thomas Kuhn, a historian of science, talked about paradigms—how revolutionary shifts in science come when communities push beyond the boundaries of accepted knowledge. We’re in a paradigm shift now with AI. Sharing data, insights, and perspectives is like piecing together a puzzle. Alone, you might never see the whole picture. Together, you can.

Dr. Kevin Mayo: Often, it’s awareness. In discussions, someone brings up an idea I hadn’t considered. That sparks me to dig deeper. It’s similar to how generative AI unlocked access to massive knowledge—DLN does that too, but through people. The energy and synergies of many minds working together accelerate everything. That’s why I say life science is a team sport.
